Multiwavelength Observations of Gx 339[4 in 1996. I. Daily Light Curves and X-ray and Gamma-ray Spectroscopy

چکیده
As part of our multiwavelength campaign of GX 339[4 observations in 1996, we present our radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations made in July, when the source was in a hard state (\soft X-ray low state). The radio observations were made at the time when there was a possible radio jet. We show that the radio spectrum was Ñat and signiÐcantly variable and that the radio spectral shape and amplitude at this time were not anomalous for this source. Daily light curves from our pointed observation on July 9È23 using the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO), from the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on CGRO, and from the All-Sky Monitor on the Rossi X-Ray T iming Explorer (RXT E) also show that there was no signiÐcant change in the X-ray and gamma-ray Ñux or hardness during the time when the possible radio jetÈ like feature was seen. The higher energy portion of our pointed RXT E observation made on July 26 can be equally well Ðtted using simple power law times exponential (PLE) and Sunyaev-Titarchuk (ST) functions. An additional soft component is required, as well as a broad emission feature centered on D6.4 keV. This may be an iron line that is broadened by orbital Doppler motions and/or scattering o† a hot medium. Its equivalent width is D600 eV. Our simplistic continuum Ðtting does not require an extra reÑection component. Both a PLE and an ST model also Ðt our OSSE spectrum on its own. Although the observations are not quite simultaneous, combining the RXT E and CGRO spectra we Ðnd that the PLE model easily Ðts the joint spectrum. However, the ST model drops o† too rapidly with increasing energies to give an acceptable joint Ðt. Multiwavelength Observations of GX 339 – 4 in 1996 . III . Keck Spectroscopy
As part of our multiwavelength campaign of observations of GX 339–4 in 1996 we present our Keck spectroscopy performed on May 12 UT. At this time, neither the ASM on the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer nor BATSE on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory detected the source. The optical emission was still dominated by the accretion disk with V ≈ 17 mag. The dominant emission line is Hα, and for the first...

GX 339–4 is an unusual black hole candidate in that it is a persistent source, being detected by X-ray telescopes most of the time, but it also has nova-like flaring states. In 1996 we performed radio, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of GX 339–4 when it was in a hard state (= soft X-ray low state). Here we present a brief summary of some of the results. At this time, neither the ASM ...
متن کاملMulti-wavelength Observations of the 2002 Outburst of Gx 339–4: Two Patterns of X-ray–optical/near-infrared Behavior
We report on quasi-simultaneous Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and optical/near-infrared (nIR) observations of the black hole candidate X-ray transient GX 339–4. Our observations were made over a time span of more than eight months in 2002 and cover the initial rise and transition from a hard to a soft spectral state in X-rays. Two distinct patterns of correlated X-ray–optical/nIR behavior were fo...
متن کاملMultiwavelength Observations of GX 339 – 4 in 1996 . II . Rapid X - ray Variability
As part of our multiwavelength campaign of GX 339–4 observations in 1996 we present the rapid X-ray variability observed July 26 using the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) when the source was in a hard state (= soft X-ray low state). We found that the source was extremely variable, with many bright flares. The flares have relatively symmetric time profiles. There are a few time intervals wher...
متن کاملIs Gx 339 4 a Black Hole Candidate ? Optical Spectroscopy
We carried out spectroscopic and photometric observations of the candidate black-hole binary GX 339?4 during its low-hard and high-soft X-ray states. We have found that the emission lines from GX 339?4 have asymmetric, apparently round-topped prooles in the low-hard state (1997 May), and double-peaked prooles in the high-soft state (1998 April and August). Our data do not show obvious velocity ...
